Study Population: Lung cancer patients post-thoracic surgery
Abstract: Inadequate symptom assessment in cancer patients leads to unnecessary patient distress, more complicated medical treatment, and may impede recovery time and return to normal function. We will test the utility of a novel computer-based interactive voice response telephone system that monitors patients' symptoms at home, and notifies their providers when symptoms need intervention. Lung cancer patients post-thoracic surgery will respond to questions about their pain and other symptoms using their home telephone keypad. The effectiveness of this system for tracking postoperative pain and other symptoms and reducing symptom-related medical care utilization will be evaluated in a randomized clinical trial.
