Abstract: Clinical usage particularly for post-operative review has been underway in London for five years now with projects assessing acceptability and safety. Consultation with three centres in South Africa have been underway for three years. The project has been closely monitored and records were kept of cases discussed. A review of outcomes has included: 1) Utilization; 2) Clinical effectiveness; 3) Cost effectiveness; and 4) Clinician opinions of the system. In addition, several clinical projects have investigated the safety and practicality of teleophthalmological assessment for different purposes including: 1) Adnexal disease (lids and orbit); 2) Ocular motility; 3) Post-operative cataract; 4) Post-operative trabeculectomy; 5) Neuro-ophthalmology; 6) Diabetic retinopathy; and 7) Ophthalmic accident and emergency.
