Data Source: As part of the review and assessment of relevant research for the project, AGI continued to update its materials on relevant published and unpublished reports on the sexual and reproductive health of young people in Sub-Saharan Africa, and especially in Nigeria. These materials have been entered into a ProCite database and organized by theme. AGI's informational resources for this literature review have been enhanced by a separately-funded project on HIV and youth in Sub-Saharan Africa, as discussed in the section below on additional project resources. The literature review has been useful in providing a more comprehensive understanding of adolescents' knowledge and attitudes, risk perception, and risk and protective behaviors related to HIV. The review has also helped AGI to obtain a more accurate understanding of the social context of adolescents' lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. Includes recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data, from 1999 and later, in eight countries (including Nigeria).
Population Base: Sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on Nigeria
Study Population: Adolescent males and females 15-24 in Nigeria and other nations in Sub-Saharan Africa
Abstract: The overall goal of the project is to promote better understanding of young people's sexual and reproductive behavior and health in Sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on Nigeria. AGI is gathering, analyzing and publicizing pertinent information on the sexual and reproductive behaviors of adolescents and the implications of these behaviors for their reproductive health needs. The project's objectives are: 1. to ascertain which issues are most relevant to program and policy challenges in the area of adolescent sexual and reproductive health, including sexual behavior, abortion, childbearing, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV infections within the country and the region; 2. to explore impediments to serving adolescents' sexual and reproductive health needs; 3. to raise awareness of the grave consequences of ignoring the sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents in the region; and 4. to draw out commonalities and lessons learned throughout the region. Planned Project Activities. 1. A literature review of relevant published and unpublished reports on the sexual and reproductive health of young people in Sub-Saharan Africa, and especially in Nigeria. These materials have been entered into a ProCite database and organized by theme and have provided a more comprehensive understanding of adolescents' knowledge and attitudes, risk perception, and risk and protective behaviors related to HIV. The review has also helped AGI to obtain a more accurate understanding of the social context of adolescents' lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. 2. AGI has been analyzing a large body of existing information to inform three reports that will result from this project and reflect its objectives: A. An overview of HIV/AIDS. The first project report, an overview of HIV/AIDS and youth in Sub-Saharan Africa, is currently being prepared. The report will combine information from the literature review with measures and tables generated from recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data, from 1999 and later, in eight countries (including Nigeria). The first draft of the report, HIV/AIDS and Youth in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Overview, has been completed and is currently under review within the Institute. The anticipated date of publication for the report is July 2003. B. Sexual behavior of Nigerian adolescents. With additional DHS analyses that are now in progress, AGI is preparing an outline for this second planned project report. The report will be synthesized into an article to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, with an anticipated publication date in early 2004. C. Adolescent pregnancy and childbearing in Nigeria. DHS analyses are also being used to prepare an outline for the third planned report for the project, which will present new trends in and information on adolescent pregnancy and childbearing in the country. The report will be published as a brief summary overview in AGI's Research in Brief series in late 2003.
