Abstract: Evidence suggests that access to health care for Maine's 1800+ prisoners is problematic. The purpose of this project is to examine some of the barriers to health care, from the perspective of the prisoners themselves. The study is also identifying strengths and weaknesses of the prison health care system, and making recommendations for improvement. To do this, the School is developing a comprehensive survey instrument that provides measures of prisoners' health care needs, their ability to access services, and their satisfaction with the services they receive. All of Maine's prison population is being given the opportunity to participate in the survey. A report of the findings and recommendations from this study will be shared with Maine Department of Corrections, the Governor's Office, the Maine Legislature, and each of the seven prisons. The final copy of the report will be posted to the Maine Civil Liberties Union Web site.
