| Abstract: | The hospital CEO turnover being 14-18 percent per year, the study is a nationwide survey of hospital CEOs and Board Chairs to understand the impact of CEO turnover on the financial performance and quality of care at the parent institution. The study also seeks to assess the effect of CEO turnover on employee morale, medical staff relations and relations with the community served by the hospital. Through structured, close-ended mail-out questionnaires the study involves collection of recall and perceptional data on the voluntary or involuntary circumstances of CEO departure and its subsequent impact in the form of initiation, deferment or cessation of various activities such as strategic planning, organizational restructuring, business development, changes in workforce, community outreach and the mix of services offered. Information on specific and quantifiable performance indicators will be supplemented through identification and use of secondary data sources. The intent of the study is to find mechanisms to circumvent specific negative effects of planned or abrupt change in the leadership through better planning and prompt response to such events in an environment of uncertainty, changes and turbulence. |
