Abstract: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in partnership with Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and the University of California at San Francisco, will develop a toolkit to promote patient self-management for those experiencing post-myocardial infarction (post MI). The development process is as follows. First we will identify key messages. As with the diabetes and COPD guides, we will review previously developed post MI self-management educational materials. Second, we will conduct focus groups and in-depth interviews with patients and physicians, identify the key messages in the words of the patients, understand emotions related to post MI as well as the barriers to effective post MI management and patient-centered strategies for overcoming such barriers, and understand the opinions and priorities of the physicians and the practice work-flow issues. The number of focus groups is to be determined partly by thematic saturation. Third we will develop the prototype guide and photography. Fourth are cognitive interviews. Participants will review the self-management guide and will be asked questions about its content. Such questions may include: What does this phrase mean to you? Do you agree with this tip for managing your post Ml care? How does this page make you feel? The guide will be tested until consensus is reached. Finally, we will finalize the guide. UNC-CH's role: Site Principal Investigator, Darren DeWalt, and co-Investigator, Michael Gilchrest, will contribute substantively to the concept and development of the guide. Additionally, UNC-CH will provide a research assistant experienced in cognitive interviews to assist in collecting patient feedback on the prototype.
