Abstract: Kidney transplant candidates are at very high risk for coronary artery disease (CAD). The optimal strategy to monitor and maintain the cardiac fitness of patients awaiting kidney transplantation is unknown. Currently patients undergo annual testing to determine if they have developed disease. This study will determine whether screening is necessary. The study, regardless of the result, will impact transplant practice worldwide. The results will either a) make better use of scarce deceased donor kidneys by permitting better wait-list management, or b) save valuable resources due to averting needless and potentially detrimental tests in asymptomatic patients.
