| Abstract: | This Data Watch article targeted for the journal Health Affairs will quantify the increasing role of specialty drugs in outpatient prescription drug use and expenditure from 2009 to 2016. First, we will examine the proportion of prescription fills that are specialty drugs and spending on specialty drugs as a percentage of total drug spending. Next, we will examine the percentages of individuals with drug use in the following hierarchical categories: 1) used any specialty drugs, 2) used any single source brand name drugs, and 3) used multisource drugs only. Finally, we will examine person-level total and out-of-pocket drug spending for individuals in each of these drug use categories. For all analyses, we will examine overall trends for the full population as well as trends by insurance status. |
