Abstract: Telehealth has been a significant innovation in the delivery of rural health services the last two decades, and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has been a national leader in the implementation of telehealth services. Furthermore, the VHA's fully integrated health system enables important outcomes across the care continuum to be examined. These features allow identification of key learning points for the general population that cannot be answered elsewhere. Chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus (DM), congestive heart failure (CHF), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are highly prevalent. This proposed effort is designed to jointly fund a collaborative project with the Veterans Rural Health Resource Center in the Iowa City VA Health Care System to better understand how VHA telehealth has impacted access, quality, efficiency, and cost of care for rural veterans. This project is specifically designed to conduct a comparative effectiveness study of veterans who have used chronic disease management telehealth compared to those who have not. This project is unique because it will expand previous research on these telehealth services by examining multiple chronic diseases that are prevalent in veterans and do so in a national sample during the last seven years.
