Abstract: The purpose of this project is to compare the cost-effectiveness of the major forms of contraceptive therapy available in the United States. The cost-effectiveness analysis will take into account the following factors: 1) Differences in the use effectiveness of contraceptive therapies; 2) The economic cost to the mother of using various contraceptives including the costs associated with the long-term consequences of various forms of contraception. This includes the medical costs of pregnancy and the medical costs associated with high-risk pregnancies and poor birth outcomes. (Direct cost model); 3) The economic costs of unintended pregnancies. This model will analyze the effect of unintended pregnancy on education attainment, labor force participation and participation in federally funded programs such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) (Human Capital Model); 4) The chief comparator in this analysis will be the use of no contraceptives.
