Abstract: The purpose of this study is to define the health and economic impact of out of home child care in a community. The research described here will investigate the effects of group child-care arrangements on the health of young children and the costs associated with their adverse health effects. From a public policy point of view, the cost implications of increased illnesses and injuries are significant. Such costs are two-fold: economic and human costs. Economic costs include increased costs of health care and the costs of parental (mostly maternal) days lost from work. The proposed study will achieve two objectives: Review and synthesize the findings of previous studies on the effects of non-maternal group child-care arrangements on the health outcomes of children, their families and child-care workers and, the associated costs of adverse health outcomes; and, design a prospective longitudinal study that will collect primary data on the direct and indirect costs of adverse health effects of child-care arrangements.
