Abstract: The purpose of this project is to analyze existing automated data files from a Health Maintenance Organization's computerized appointment and encounter system to examine factors related to mammography use by women greater than 50 years. These factors should include: demographic characteristics, type of coverage, type of provider and practice setting, frequency and type of medical visits, and interval between mammography exams. The information should then be used to design medical center-based interventions to increase mammography use by women in the HMO and alter provider practices to promote mammography for their patients. These interventions would be implemented in some, but not all, of the HMO's medical centers. In addition, an evaluation will be conducted of medical center-based interventions to encourage and motivate women to obtain mammography screening. The evaluation effort should compare the rates of mammography use in the centers with the intervention to those without one, or with another intervention.
