Abstract: The goal of this project is to design, test, and validate an Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) for acute care that will function as a prognostic tool to predict visual outcome following serious eye injuries. In order to develop the OTS, the investigators will conduct a 3-year follow-up study of at least 3,429 eye injuries. Records of the first 2,797 injuries will be used to develop the OTS while records of the last 645 will be used to test the predictive validity of the scale. To validate the OTS, it will be tested for prognostication of visual outcome on prospective cases. Using prospective cases, the predicted OTS value will be compared with the actual visual outcome of the injured eyes. The OTS will provide a common language in the evaluation of eye injuries for practicing ophthalmologists, other health professionals, and researchers working in the field of ocular trauma.
