Abstract: The purposes of this study are to (1) identify and measure risk factors for secondary conditions brought on by violence in the lives of women with physical disabilities who experience limitations in mobility and personal care/home management and (2) develop an intervention to enhance protective factors that can reduce violence in their lives. Violence is a problem of serious proportions among women with physical disabilities. This study will examine exposure to family, partner, and service provider violence. Using the theory of planned Behavior and the Intervention Mapping Process, the researchers will develop and test methods for assisting women with physical disabilities to increase their safety behaviors and contacts with community resources to resolve abusive behaviors. The aims of the study are to (1) evaluate the dynamics of violence against women with physical disabilities to determine risk and protective factors, barriers to seeking help, and the effectiveness of available interventions; (2) develop and test the validity of an abuse assessment instrument designed for women with physical disabilities, in comparison to standard abuse assessments; (3) develop and pilot test an intervention for women with physical disabilities that will decrease their risk of abuse; and (4) disseminate information about violence against women with disabilities and the results of this study to women with disabilities, programs for battered women, disability service providers, medical practitioners, and researchers.
