| Abstract: | This project is designed to improve the health of individuals having the primary disabilities of arthritis, diabetes, stroke, and Down syndrome, through a combination of (1) research on incidence rates and key risk factors for the development of secondary conditions, and (2) an intervention component designed to prevent the development of or minimize the impact of specified secondary conditions. Secondary conditions that will be studied include lack of physical fitness, weight gain, poor nutrition, emotional dependence, depression, behavioral problems, and family stress. Surveillance data will be collected on the prevalence of risk factors and secondary conditions in the study population. Pre/post measures of fitness, nutrition, and mental health will be collected. The intervention component will be comprised of exercise sessions, nutritional training, cooking classes, and peer support groups. The intervention sessions will focus on the specific risk factors present. |
