| Abstract: | This research will advance the prevention of secondary conditions through assessment and documentation of the role of environmental factors and the nature of participation in children and youth with disabilities. The project will operationalize selected measurement implications of the ICIDH in its original form and the current draft revision and examine its utility in public health applications. The goals of this research are to (1) document the nature and extent of disablement, including risk and protective factors, in the understudied population of children and youth; (2) develop and evaluate measures for assessing participation and environment in population-based and condition specific samples; and (3) identify and evaluate implications for the prevention of secondary conditions. This study will (1) document the nature and role of environmental factors in participation of students with disabilities in school related activities; (2) focus on the role of physical education in public schools as a factor influencing secondary conditions and participation of children and youth with motor impairments; and (3) study the role of developmental and environmental factors in secondary conditions in youth with traumatic brain injury. |
