Abstract: This is a population-based study designed to develop a better understanding of the secondary conditions that occur among youth with a disability in the mobility domain and to inform efforts to improve their quality of life. The aims of the project are to (1) describe the secondary conditions with respect to physical and mental health, social and academic functioning, and self-concept, autonomy, vocational plans, and health risk behavior, (2) identify risk and protective factors that influence the differences in quality of life and the types and degrees of secondary conditions observed among youth with mobility disability, and (3) test the usefulness of a conceptual model of explaining the quality of life and secondary conditions, by simultaneously considering contributions of both risk and protective factors. Quality of life and secondary conditions, as well as hypothesized risk and protective factors, will be assessed in home interviews with 400 pairs of youth with mobility impairments due to skeletal impairment and their parents. Among other things, this research will inform policy and public health planners about (1) when in adolescence some of the secondary conditions develop and why; (2) which groups may be at risk for developing secondary conditions and my be in need of prevention services; and (3) how to intervene with those who are already experiencing secondary conditions.
