| Abstract: | This project is a study of the effect of an intervention on women's participation in physical activity and on the occurrence of secondary conditions. It will also identify risk and protective factors that increase or decrease the occurrence of secondary conditions in women with mobility impairments. Women will be randomly assigned to control and treatment groups for the intervention. Those in the treatment group will be provided with a multi-component package directed at increasing their level of physical activity. Components will include individualized physical activity counseling, an educational workshop, peer and social interaction, self-monitoring, and self-reinforcement. The researchers anticipate that at the conclusion of the study the treatment group will have decreased levels of depression, increased conditioning and general functionality, decreased adiposity, decreased joint pain, increased upper-extremity joint range of motion, altered blood lipid profiles, and decreased secondary conditions. |
